About me

Elisa Winkelmann
Hello! I am Elisa, founder of EW Lingua.
What I like most about languages is that they are alive. We do not speak the same way as our parents or grandparents. The way we speak is a product of what has been passed down to us, of the people around us, and of countless other reasons that shape it.
The language defines us, creates our identity. Everything we are as individuals can be expressed in words, and those words are imbued with culture and experiences.
These two ideas are the fundamental pillars of my project. EW Lingua is a vision of learning the German language that, taking into account the students' experience, their context, and their motivations, seeks to create bridges between them and their goals.

Some curiosities about me
I'm from Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt. Many people tell me that I don't have a very strong dialect, and that's true. The reason is simple: Our way of speaking is the result of thousands of external factors. My parents are not from Magdeburg but from a nearby village and another from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Moreover, when I was 18, I went to Spain. Then, at university, I started speaking with many different people in German (Spaniards, people from Brandenburg, folks from Bavaria, professors from Freiburg, friends from Hamburg...). That said, I now know much more about German and I love being able to contrast it with my origins.
I love Spain, but especially Andalucía. When I was 18, I came here for the first time, specifically to Seville, as an Au Pair. It was the most intense and emotional year for me until now. Years have passed and I am still just as in love with this place. Now I live in Jerez de la Frontera, I dance Sevillanas, Bulerías, I know typical sayings, I cook more Spanish recipes than German ones, and you can even tell that I live here by the way I speak (although I still slip up with some odd mistakes).
Thanks to my studies in Business Administration at EWA, Madrid, I spent 9 months at DHBW to complete my degree in Baden-Württemberg. The lovely Mosbach-Baden welcomed me with great warmth, especially because of my lovely shared flat. What a wonderful time - If you haven't been there, I highly recommend it. In the photo, you can see Heidelberg, a treasure of this region, but I must say that absolutely everything fascinated me. The nature near the Neckar is incredible. I made lifelong friends, overcame many challenges, and discovered places in my own country that I didn't know. Over the years, I had travelled more around Spain than Germany. After this period, I changed that forever (Also because they started introducing the Deutschlandticket).
You will see that my journey is not especially linear.
Nor is learning.
Our journeys are unique.
So is learning.
